Blog Off: managing
social media in the workplace
The IPA and SJ Berwin are inviting you to an employment law breakfast seminar looking at the impact of social media in the workplace, with particular focus on the recruitment process, taking disciplinary action against employees for misuse, and protecting confidential information.
The array of recent cases on the use of social media sites by employees highlights a growing hazard for employers, which should not be ignored. While many employers will have generic IT and internet policies in place, it is important that the issues associated with the use of social media by employees (both inside and outside of working hours) are specifically addressed.
This seminar will consider some problematic issues for business such as:
- Whether employers can rely on informal information about candidates (e.g. sourced through the internet), rather than formal information provided during the recruitment process
- The circumstances in which an employee can be disciplined and/or dismissed for their use of social media sites
- Whether an employer has any proprietary interest in material on sites such as LinkedIn and how to protect against the loss of confidential information
- The balance between protecting the business versus benefits of engaging with social media
This briefing will be relevant to human resources staff and, those responsible for recruitment and management of employees.
It will be presented by
Carl Richards, Partner, and
Simone Hachache, Associate, in the Employment and Pensions Department at international law firm
