IPA Summer School gets underway

Term has started for the 26 successful students who have won a place on the IPA’s Summer School. They were welcomed at an IPA Ceremony last night (4th July), where they heard from IPA President Nicola Mendelsohn, IPA Director General Paul Bainsfair, Neil Francis, Creative Partner, SFW and two previous IPA Summer School graduates.

The IPA Summer School was designed to attract fresh talent into the industry and to help students launch their careers. Now in its fifth year, it has gone from strength-to-strength, with over 40% of the students from the previous Summer Schools having gone on to work in the industry.

The Summer School comprises two programmes: the Client Services/Planning programme and Creative programme. This year’s participating IPA member agencies include Brave, CMW, Crayon, EuroRSCG, G2, Karmarama, Kitcatt Nohr, LIDA, OgilvyOne, OMD, Proximity, Rapier, RAPP, SFW and VML.

During their placements the students will learn from the best in the business, work on live briefs and enjoy a series of special evening seminars and social events. In addition, they will also be given prize money, and if they prove to be successful in their placements, there is the possibility of a job interview.

Says Nicola Mendelsohn, IPA President and Executive Chairman and Partner, Karmarama: “My agenda as President of the IPA is to create a new generation of creative pioneers by equipping people with better skills, creating better connections and re-energising the industry with fresh talent, and it is this last point that explains why I was so pleased to welcome the new interns of this year’s IPA Summer School. The calibre of student applications were again exceptional this year and the successful applicants, who survived a rigorous, X-Factor style, judging process, should be proud of their placements on this prestigious programme. The industry is moving at a great pace and we are in need of fresh thinking to help come up with new and exciting ideas to secure and lead the future of advertising.”

Says Chris Whitson, Planning Partner, SFW and Chair of the IPA Direct Marketing Group: “More than ever it pays to invest in young talent and to give that talent the time and the opportunity to shine. The IPA Summer School is our industry’s chance to prove its worth to bright, motivated young people and for those young people to see if it’s an industry that can offer a compelling career choice. It’s an intensive learning experience for the successful candidates - with your agency as the classroom and your top people as the teachers.”

Says Neil Francis, Creative Partner, SFW: ‘‘We’re looking to make this year’s IPA Summer Schools the best ever. One thing I can say for sure is that we have placed more students than ever before, in more agencies - that’s one measure of the growing success of the Summer School. And for those judges and mentors who have been with us before there’s a feeling that the quality of students and their submissions have upped the ante again this year. No question about it, the IPA Summer School prove that there is an impressive pool of talent out there that the industry has thus far been missing.”
