Front End Developer

Job description

We are looking for a Front End Developer to work on a range of CMS and web applications projects for midsize to enterprise clients including well known brands such as WaterAid, BAFTA, National Grid, National Youth Theatre, University of Central Lancashire, Stagecoach Bus and Wave Utilities.

The Front End Developer is responsible for developing high quality HTML, CSS and basic JavaScript interactivity. This role requires a focus on producing quality maintainable code, and someone that is passionate about accessibility, usability, performance and creating the end user experience. Responsible for developing and upgrading front end code and functionality on larger projects, led by Senior Front End Developers and Technical Leads, there will be the opportunity to take the lead, from start to finish, on smaller projects.

Front End Developer responsibilities and duties

Your focus will be predominantly on front end development but a broader understanding of the full stack, and the ability to work on basic backend when required would be a plus, (although you will have a Back End specialists in your team).

Delivering high quality solutions, focussed on helping clients achieve their goals.
Collaborating on design and UX to deliver usable, accessible and visually impactful results.
Participating in briefing sessions, contributing to writing technical specifications and estimates
Supporting existing clients with front end fixes, upgrades and improvements
Contributing to the ongoing improvements and refinements of our working practices including new technologies and delivery methodologies
Contribute to sprint demos, retrospectives and planning meetings. Communicate your technical approach at an appropriate level, for mixed audiences, including clients.

Front End Developer qualifications and skills

2+ years on-the-job experience of commercial website or application development.
2+ years on-the-job experience in HTML, CSS and basic JavaScript. You’ll have the motivation to become expert.
Experience or knowledge of version control systems (preferably Git) and team workflows.
Ability to produce and review high quality, clean code, with a focus on standards and accessibility
Usability and accessibility understanding – committed to creating great user experience across browsers and devices
Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team, strong teamwork and communication skills

Desirable Skills and Experience

A good Software Engineering, Computer Science Degree, or a relevant apprenticeship qualification.
Experience of theme development for Drupal, Wordpress or other CMS
Sketch, Illustrator or Photoshop experience to produce or update wireframes, mockups and prototypes
Knowledge or interest in decoupled or headless applications.
Understanding or experience of front end testing and automation tools
Broader understanding / experience (or the desire) of working with frameworks such as React, Gatsby and VueJS.
