The communications account manager must have at least three years of relevant experience in public relations and/or related fields including marketing, content creation, management consulting, media and publishing.
S/he will have a proven ability to manage large projects as well as small teams on one or more sizable accounts. S/he will have a comprehensive understanding of his/her clients’ businesses and their missions, as well as their key stakeholders: consumers, employees, investors, regulators, media, vendors, partners and other businesses/organisations, etc., and will be able to impart this knowledge to account team members. S/he will have excellent written and verbal communications skills. S/he will have demonstrated ability to delegate tactical assignments and accurately judge and edit the work of others at or below his/her level. S/he will be able to work with senior staff to develop and execute communications plans based on client goals. S/he will be familiar with best practice communications tactics and public relations tools and will be able to recommend them to his/her clients. S/he will have the ability to act as a daily client contact and to be responsible for client-related finance management, including managing large projects within budget.
A communications account manager is responsible for managing her/his project teams’ performance as it relates to client service and quality control. S/he will understand Big Cat’s various consulting processes/approaches and capabilities, including public engagement, message workshops, master narrative assignments, brand engagement and social media exercises, and be able to recommend appropriate tactics to clients and lead small teams on project implementation.
Expected competencies include:
o Play a major role in the research, planning and development of comprehensive public relations and communications campaigns
o Serve as daily client contact and as client lead when appropriate
o Oversee quality and operational performance of accounts, ensuring work quality and deadline adherence
o Help set client program goals and manage against them
o Elevate problems to superiors and solicit their counsel when needed but in appropriate measure
o Demonstrate proficiency in writing skills to craft internal and client correspondence, communications plans, press materials, new business proposals, etc.
o Demonstrate tactical proficiency in media relations, including creating and driving outreach plans, message development, management of events, effective pitching and training of spokespersons on speeches and presentations and growth of contact network
o Demonstrate practical and advanced understanding of visual communications, social media and the digital landscape and how to incorporate these channels into client programs
o Generate original ideas for sustainable online community engagement, help integrate them into plans, measure and evaluate them to ensure they contribute to client goal achievement
o Foster relationships with third-party influencers
o Oversee junior staff’s work to ensure quality and consistency
o Ensure performance expectations, career development plan and goals are set and reviewed every six months during the formal performance review process
o Provide ongoing constructive feedback and consistently hold staff accountable for performance, compliance and ethical business conduct
o Work with senior staff, when needed, to address under-performance in a timely manner
o Help mentor, coach and support team members and ensure you and your staff are constantly developing abilities
o Assist in recruitment process by interviewing and helping select new hires
o Build network of industry clients and participate in relevant professional organisations and networking activities that will grow Big Cat brand recognition and your own reputation
o Contribute to new business process, including identifying new business opportunities
o Work with colleagues to introduce existing clients to relevant and new Big Cat capabilities, including resources outside of your own department, to advance their business goals
Financial Planning and Management
o Demonstrate understanding of core financial constructs including revenue, profitability, pricing structures (hourly vs. retainer accounts), budgeting and forecasting
o Record, submit and approve time, expenses and POs to the right project codes on a timely basis – ideally daily, but no later than weekly
o Assist with the development of accurate project budgets
o Effectively work within account budget parameters and deadlines
o Manage day-to-day client budget
o Track and monitor project financials
