Open your doors to the next generation of adland stars

Take part on Wednesday 9 November

After a three-year break Advertising Unlocked returns on Wednesday 9 November 2022 and with lots of schools already registered we need your agency to be a part of adland’s biggest industry-wide ‘Open Day’.

We’d love you to be a showcase for the industry, revealing how campaigns are made and who is involved at every stage of this process, from meme managers to web engineers and tap into an audience of fresh, diverse talent.

What’s in it for you?

Since inception, over 5,000 students have taken part, with feedback from previous years demonstrating the tangible benefits for both students and agencies. Hear from some of those involved in 2019 about how Advertising Unlocked has helped them, and fill in this short form to register for 2022 to start reaping the benefits.

Amy Bulsara, Marketing Manager, Cogent

We’re delighted that Advertising Unlocked is back again for 2022. In 2019, we welcomed twenty 15-year-old students from a local Warwickshire school to attend our agency for the day. We were able to give the students a flavour of the Marketing industry and what a typical day at Cogent looks like.

We got first-hand insight into how young students view the industry, which was extremely insightful. Some of the students were surprised to learn that marketing isn’t just television ads and billboards and they really benefited from being told about other roles that agencies undertake day to day.

We felt it was important to emphasise the fact that marketing isn’t just for designers and artists but that the industry requires a range of skills including arts, humanities, science, technology, engineering and maths.

The IPA Advertising Unlocked programme is a fantastic initiative for our agency and for the industry as a whole. It’s great to be a part of something that encourages the next generation of marketeers to explore more about a career in our industry. The past few years have presented the industry with recruitment challenges, which is why it is more important than ever to nurture new and diverse talent and we’re thrilled to be involved again for 2022.

Lara Poole, Head of Account Management, St Luke’s

To help a new generation of talent understand the world of advertising and whether it could provide a career for them, we unlocked our gates and welcomed Deptford Green School into the agency as part of the IPA’s Advertising Unlocked Scheme.

17 enthusiastic students joined us for a day of activities to understand what it’s really like working in an independent agency and how to create bold Agenda Setting Ideas for our clients. We walked our guests through the life of a campaign, how to write a brief, developing creative ideas and how to produce a TV and print advert. The students even got a chance to write and produce a radio ad themselves to see how it’s really done!

If you’re not familiar with the world of advertising, it can seem like a confusing place and working out which role might be best for you can be daunting.

By giving the students the opportunity to have a taster of all the different departments and job roles involved in getting a campaign out the door, we hope it helped them get excited about the opportunities available in our industry, wherever their strengths and passions lie.

Working together with the students, seeing them get creative on the tasks they had been set and answering all their questions was so rewarding for all those who took part in facilitating the day. As an agency we’re super excited to get stuck in and meet more students this year to help give more people the opportunity to understand our industry and the wealth of career options on offer.

Avelon Thompson, DEI Business Partner, MediaCom

MediaCom regularly host insights days and have been a part of Advertising Unlocked since its beginning. Advertising unlocked allows MediaCom to open the doors to a wide range of people who are interested in finding out a bit more about a career in a media agency. It allows them to get a sense of whether they can see themselves reflected and imagine working in the industry. Through a series of practical exercises, Q&As, panels, networking and tours, attendees are able to really get a sense of a Media Agency and as the days are designed and delivered by our junior talent, the information is as relatable and empathic as possible! We recruit a high number of people through these days and diversity of thought and experience is at the heart of the day.

We want our talent to know and feel that they have equitable opportunities and to understand that they can flourish and progress to senior levels. Inclusion and belonging is so important to the well-being of our people, we make sure we put it at the heart of the agency.

We are excited that our MediaCom North offices will also be taking part. With offices in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds and Scotland, we invite everyone to attend a MediaCom Advertising Unlocked event to get an insight into People first culture and ethos.
