Today the IPA remembers Eric Burleton who passed away peacefully on the 16th October, aged 95.

Eric dedicated more than 50 years to the advertising industry. He was a winner of the coveted AA MacKintosh Medal in 1987 for his services to advertising. He became a Fellow of the IPA in 1962 and still holds the record as the longest standing member of IPA Council. He served on many IPA committees including the Education and Training Committee, the Professional Standards Committee and was chairman of the IPA Advertising Controls Group, and was also commissioned to write the IPA’s history for it’s 75th anniversary in 1992.

He first joined Lintas as a layout artist in August 1938. After war service he joined Armstrong-Warden Ltd (later Smith-Warden) where he progressed from Account Exe to Joint MD. In 1965 he became Director of Stowe & Bowden and then MD of one of their companies, LPA Ltd. In 1973 LPA merged with Royds and he was appointed Vice Chairman. In 1983 he became Director responsible for industry affairs at ABM.

He has been Chairman of the Institute of Sales Promotion, Chairman of the Regent Advertising Club, a governor of the CAM Foundation, a Council member of NABS, a member of the Council of the Direct Mail Services, Chairman of the European Association of Advertising Agencies Advertising to Children Committee. He also was the agency representative on the AA’s Executive Committee and several AA working parties, the IBA Advertising Advisory Committee and the Code of Advertising Practice Committee. He also served as Secretary to The Solus Club for twenty-one years and was its President in 1979.

A gentleman. He will be remembered for his conspicuous service to the advertising industry.

He is survived by his wife Pamela and after spending many years in Abinger Hammer, Surrey latterly moved to Gloucestershire. His funeral will take place on 31st October for family only. Donations in Eric’s name can be made to either the RNLI or The Salvation Army. These are being co-ordinated by Philip Ford and son, Dirleton House, Cainscross Road, Stroud GL5 4ES.
