Advertising is all around us and makes for a very stimulating career choice. The advertising industry makes a significant contribution to the UK economy, with £6 of value generated for every £1 spent on an ad campaign, generating £109 billion of GVA for the UK economy, supporting 5% of UK jobs, selling £18 billion worth of exports. And that’s not all. Advertising can change society for the better.
Advertising is all around us. On TV, at the cinema, on the radio, in newspapers and magazines or staring back at you in the form of a 48-sheet poster along the roadside. And that’s just what we call traditional advertising. There are ambient ads too, which are attached to bikes, taxis, buses, escalators, bus stops, petrol pumps, building sites and even store floors. Sponsorship is another form of advertising. From supporting your local football team to the huge branding opportunities of having your business attached to the Women’s World Cup Final in 2023. And in the last 10 years, targeted advertising via web and social media has skyrocketed, meaning your favourite podcast is probably funded by ads. There’s also experiential. Ever been given a free chocolate bar at a train station? Influencers like Molly Mae are advertising daily, too, and so are you when you post a picture of the beach or bar you’ve just visited. The list goes on. So you see, advertising is a huge part of everyone’s lives.
And that’s not all. Advertising can change society for the better. We can change behaviours by promoting the adoption of positive behaviours or through the prevention of negative ones. Think back to the We're The Superhumans | Rio Paralympics 2016 Trailer, Maltesers Theo's Dog, or I Came by Train for Trainline. All agencies enjoy helping charities, for example, the ‘Unseen CV’ ad for research and campaigning charity Autistica aimed to boost employment opportunities and support for neurodivergent people. It’s true to say – we have the power to change the world.
It used to be you had to have a talent for writing or art. Of course, we still need those vital talents but the industry has changed so much over the last 10 years and technology and data now play a huge part in our world. So if your penchant is playing Fortnite and you are fascinated about how the games are animated and programmed – we need you. And if you love numbers and analysing data, then our clients are going to love you. Are you a good implementer and a good communicator? Perhaps you are methodical and need insight to inform? Maybe you love influencers and social media, or UX, AI or coding is your thing? Whatever your strengths and passions, we can guarantee that working in our creative environment, with a range of talented people who’ll inspire you, is worth getting up for every day and makes for a very stimulating career choice
