IPA responds to Govt postponement of HFSS restrictions

Richard Lindsay, Director of Legal & Public Affairs, IPA comments.

The IPA has today responded to the news that the Government is to postpone the implementation of HFSS restrictions until 2025.

Says Richard Lindsay, Director of Legal & Public Affairs, IPA:

“Now that the Government has confirmed that the implementation date for the HFSS ad restrictions will move to 1 October 2025, businesses will at least have some certainty and sufficient time to get to grips with the new rules once those are clarified. We will continue to work with our agency members as further information from Government on the restrictions comes to light. We remain of the view, however, that advertising restrictions will do nothing to tackle childhood obesity and that the focus should be on addressing its root causes.”

In addition to the ministerial statement and SI confirming the delay, Government has published the technical consultation on definitions of the exemptions to be included in secondary legislation for the restrictions. This closes on 31 March 2023 and the IPA will be consulting with its fellow trade associations on a response.
