We’re not a media agency, so we’re not incentivised to mark our own homework.
Measurelab is a data analytics consultancy that prides itself on “knowing its shit.” Since the beginning – which dates back to a chance meeting on the Google campus in California in 2012 – co-founders Mark Rochefort and Dara Fitzgerald have been working to build the company they always wanted to work for.
That has involved creating a “laser focused” consultancy that can tackle very specific problems well. Indeed, this decision to upend the broader agency offering has paid off; today, Measurelab has a 20-strong team of data experts working with product and marketing teams at a roster of clients including Google Store, EDF Energy, Pret and Fred Perry.
Measurelab might be small in size but its specialist knowledge of the Google stack, combined with the strategic use of open-source and complementary technologies, has enabled it to stay ahead of industry trends and offer clients bespoke solutions with global reach.
Measurelab believes its positioning as a consultancy rather than a media agency helps it stand out in a pitch, as it is completely impartial when it comes to the data it is working with.
“We’re not incentivised to mark our own homework and upmark particular media channels. All the data we’re working with is linked to finding value for that client – whether that be activation, improved user journeys or increased conversions."
Measurelab is certainly riding a good wave right now with the explosion in cloud technology, data and marketing analytics. It is in well positioned to take advantage of innovations in AI and automation as well, particularly given its lean size and ability to react to market changes.
But Mark and Dara have always tried to be careful not to be a “growth at all costs” company. That initial goal, to be the company they always wanted to work for, means prioritising employee wellbeing and flexibility to enable a good work-life balance.
Covid forced its hand to take a remote-first approach, which has been fundamental in enabling that ethos while also helping Measurelab to scale quickly, opening up an extended team of associates.
The plan now is to do what it has always been doing. If it can continue to evolve products and services while fostering a good work culture, Mark and Dara believe growth will follow.
It has worked for the past 12 years, after all.
