We are all about relevance and helping brands show up in the right conversations.
From bicycles to social media, Spin Brands never anticipated it would evolve to be the international creative agency it has come to be today. It started as a side-project back in 2016, when co-founders Alex Bodini and Max Whicher met in the cycling industry. It was the early days of ecommerce and they had experience building bike brands online, so they put their heads together to offer some social media consultancy for a few small bike brands (hence the name).
Over the next 18 months, Spin Brands took off and, without meaning to, transitioned to a full-time agency. Today, its team of 75 “social natives” are working on campaigns for global brands including Google, Ali Express and Fujifilm.
The agency’s inherent ability to tap into popular culture and social media has proved to be attractive to brands so far. But Spin knows it can’t rely on young energy and enthusiasm forever, and over the past year-and-a-half has been going through a period of “professionalisation”. This has involved bringing in more infrastructure, client leadership, strategists, finance and HR.
2025 is shaping up to be bigger than the last, with Spin completing its first acquisition earlier this year. The addition of audience agency Be A Bear will help strengthen Spin’s social offering, particularly YouTube, and bring the likes of Paramount, Speedo and MTV to the roster.
Headquartered in London, Spin’s primary focus has been on the UK to-date, which accounts for about 60% of its work. But its international markets are growing – Europe and North America account for the remaining 40% – and it certainly sees potential to expand that footprint.
The goal is to get the agency to £10-12m in revenue, which is when Alex and Max will make a decision on what to do next.
“Realistically, it will all be about how much energy we've all got in the tank as the founding team. At the moment we still feel very motivated by it and we’re on a plan, but everything comes in cycles so when we get there, we’ll decide what the next move is.”
