Make Poverty History: Creating a movement

This is the story of how the Make Poverty History campaign became a social movement. In 2005, GCAP wanted to persuade the G8 leaders to make serious long term commitments to help reduce extreme Third World poverty. The strategy was to get as many people as possible to show their support for Make Poverty History in order to influence the G8 leaders. Communications centred around a white band that people could wear to show their hope, to penetrate the message into all parts of daily life. High profile individuals, including Nelson Mandela, were also used as living media to attract more people to the cause. The campaign led to the doubling of aid to Africa and the cancellation of debt of the 18 poorest countries in the world, all on a budget of £0
