There had been some advertising in 1983 but research amongst opticians had shown a greater level of communication with consumers was needed, who were seen to have a low understanding of eye defects and an even lower understanding of the benefits of varifocals. Consumer and trade press was used producing a very high coupon response. A substantial growth in volume was achieved for each quarter of 1987 compared to the previous year.
